2013 Week 4 Results!

Congratulations to week 2, 3, and 4 winners, me, Dave, Kevin, Brian, and me again.  Let's hear it for 3 time winner, me!

If you missed last week's games, here's a summary:

The Sordid Stats

These are strange times we live in.   I guess since defense wins championships, I shouldn't be too worried.  Here's a list of the top defenses:

Defense Rank Name Yards/G AP Rank
1 Michigan State 188.8 N/R
2 Florida 212.3 20
3 Louisville 220.5 7
4 USC 230.5 N/R
5 Virginia Tech 233.3 N/R
6 Wisconsin 243.3 23
7 Florida State 251 8
8 Cincinnati 253.5 N/R
9 Washington State 264.8 N/R
10 Maryland 266 N/R

Here's a list of the AP Top 10 along with their total defense and total offense rankings:

AP Rank TEAM RECORD D Rank O Rank Composite Rank
1 Alabama (56) 3-0 56 85 70.5
2 Oregon (4) 3-0 30 2 16
3 Clemson 3-0 68 45 56.5
4 Ohio State 4-0 13 15 14
5 Stanford 3-0 36 69 52.5
6 LSU 4-0 24 33 28.5
7 Louisville 4-0 3 18 10.5
8 Florida State 3-0 7 13 10
9 Georgia 2-1 69 6 37.5
10 Texas A&M 3-1 112 5 58.5
Avg 41.8 29.1

Last year Alabama finished with a composite ranking of 16 (1 in total defense, 31 in total offense).  This year, with only 1 tough game under their belt, they rank 71.  Interesting days lie ahead for the Tahd.  Suddenly, Ole Miss looks like a challenge.

Remember how Pac 12 schools with identical records to their SEC brethren were never ranked because SEC voters said they played no defense?  Now that touchdowns are en vogue in the sun belt, the rules have changed.  3 one loss SEC schools are ranked.  0 one loss schools from the PAC 12 are ranked.  (That hasn't changed).  But, 2 of the 3 unranked one loss Pac 12 schools are in the top 10 for defense, while 2 of the 3 one loss ranked SEC schools are in the top 10 for offense.  There's you're new paradigm.

Game of the Week

Finally, conference games galore.  #6 LSU at #9 UGA has to be the top game this week.  LSU is showing better balance between offense and defense, but I think UGA at home will take chances down the field and use momentum to get a few defensive stops against Cam Cameron's new offense.  I like the Tiger's o line, but I think Georgia does just enough to get a big win in Athens.

Other Notables:

USC at ASU: I have never seen such a poor misuse of offensive talent in my life.  I cannot comment any further.  My guesses: ASU stacks the box and Kiffin runs for no gain regularly. To counter the pressure in the box, he throws at or behind the line for no gain or 5 yard losses.  When finally fed up, he sends everyone deep and either gets Kessler sacked or has his QB launch  missiles into coverage.  The middle of the field is for losers who like to score. This is not our game.  Our defense however, is unreal.  3 defensive touchdowns and 10 offensive points equals a win.  C'mon baby!

#21 Ole Miss at #1 Alabama:  It's sort of a trap game, except Alabama played uninspired last week.  This can mean only one thing.  Saban will personally unscrew the head of every player who does not run through the locker room wall on the way to the field.  Alabama will be ready and Ole Miss will drop from #21 to #22.

#23 Wisconsin at #4 Ohio State: Urban Meyer can coach.  Dang it.  I can already feel it.  Louisville, Ohio State, and Florida State go undefeated.  One of them will play the SEC champ and a one loss Pac 12 team will be left out.  Let's go Badgers.  Help a brotha out.

That's it for this week.  Don't forget to get your picks in!

2013 Week 1 Results!

Welcome back, everyone.  It's been too long.  First off, my apologies for being late with the first blog post.  I was suspended half a week attempting to make people think I was serious about punishment. I learned my lesson, just like this guy:

Congratulations, Mark, for winning last year.  I forgot to send your trophy, but you can just print it from here.

Well Done Awards: LSU, FSU, UW, Clemson.  High expectations for all, but excellent performances to match.  Question of the week: When will LSU, FSU, UW, and Clemson pull a Clemson?  Soon my friends.

We're Sort of Laughing, Sort of Disgusted Awards: Oregon State, Kansas State, Iowa.  You disgust me.  But, don't worry, Oregon has their 2nd meeting in a row with a 1AA team, so they win honorable mention just for the shame of it.

MEH Awards: USC West.  Lane, the field is 100 yards long.  Just sayin'.

Week 2 Game of the Week: South Carolina vs Georgia.  It's a battle to see who falls 3 spots in next week's poll.  Will Jadeveon Clowney play more than 10 snaps before he has 'conditioning' issues again?  Will Georgia receivers tear ACLs celebrating touchdowns again?  Maybe we'll see the physical impossibility of Todd Gurley meeting Jadeveon Clowney head on at full speed.  Irresistible Object meets Immovable Force.  Who needs a Hadron Particle Collider when you can line them up and play the Oklahoma drill?  Do you feel smarter now?

I almost forgot to congratulate me on my week 1 victory!  I have no idea how I won, since I thought Brad won when I checked Saturday night.  I shall award myself richly:

Don't forget to get your picks in this week.  Bryan Counts may be in last place, but he's not as last as he was last year.  Keep it up!

Out.
